What is plagiocephaly and how can it affect your baby? What is plagiocephaly and how can it affect your baby?

Plagiocephaly is a cranial asymmetry that can have not only aesthetic, but also functional consequences for the life of the baby. Find out more about this problem in this article.

Plagiocephaly is a skull asymmetry that affects newborn babies because the bones of the skull are still malleable and easily deformed by external pressures, whether these are still inside or outside the womb.

The main characteristic of plagiocephaly is the flattening of the back of the head, which can assume the shape of a trapezoid or parallelogram and permanently deform the bony structures of the face.

Health risks beyond the aesthetic

The consequences of plagiocephaly go far beyond an aesthetic deformity, and can even interfere with the overall functioning of the bones of the face and generate serious damage to the child.

According to the Medical Clinic of Porto, among the main complications that can be triggered from a plagiocephaly picture, we can highlight:

- Difficulties in sucking, which can cause complications when feeding or even in the development of speech;

- Chronic otitis, which does not cause much discomfort, as well as constant infections in the baby's auditory apparatus;

- Vision problems, as there can be a greater pressure on the eyeballs.

- Scoliosis, resulting from the alterations in posture caused by plagiocephaly.

Causes of plagiocephaly

According to the Paediatric Clinic of Casa de Saúde da Boavista, plagiocephaly has increased in the last decades mainly due to the fact that babies are put to sleep belly up

When the baby spends a lot of time in this position (stomach up), although it is the most recommended in the fight against Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, his skull starts to suffer more pressure, so that the weight of the head against the surface where he lies generates the deformity.

Intrauterine conditions can also cause the problem, such as a small or deformed uterus, small maternal pelvis, excess or deficit of amniotic fluid, among others.

Besides, prematurity tends to accentuate the natural plasticity of the skull and, consequently, contributes to a greater risk of plagiocephaly.

The best solution is to alternate the position in which the baby sleeps

To reduce the risks of plagiocephaly, the ideal solution is to alternate the position in which the baby spends most of their time, alternating between equal periods on their back and stomach

Even so, the current indication is that the position on the stomach is the one that guarantees the greatest protection against Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (find out more here).

It is in this scenario that the following question arises: how to offer security to the baby in both situations? The answer to the impasse is Numu Baby!

Numu Baby is the only 100% breathable mattress on the market and the only one with studies proving that it reduces the risks associated with Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, no matter what position the baby is in.

The mattress is composed of a tensioned, orthopaedic net with perforations that allow the free passage of air and fluids expelled by the baby, which allows the baby to sleep face down, free from the risk of asphyxia.
